This article re-evaluates Derek Jarman’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest (1979) based on archival research into the cinematic and historical intertexts that influenced film. Specifically, it focuses impact Pier Paolo Pasolini aesthetics, particularly Italian filmmaker’s last work: Salò, or 120 Days Sodom (1975). explores how Jarman used Pasolini’s work as a filter through which to frame his play. In so doing, he produced decidedly Pasolinian twist Tempest, explicitly referred in notes “Shakespeare’s Salò.” Bridging gap between Renaissance contemporary moment, film offers meditation ideas captivity captivation extends from play film’s literal representations imprisonment their exploration affective power performance spectacle.
